Ashley Hopkinson is a digital journalist committed to excellent storytelling.
Ashley began her career in Alabama as a cops reporter for The Montgomery Advertiser and since then has covered health care, immigration, politics, arts and culture and education.
A graduate of Auburn University, Ashley also worked for The Birmingham News and The Gadsden Times, while completing her degree. She is a former Kaiser Health Fellow and worked for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and The Associated Press Bureau in Atlanta.
In 2016, Ashley joined EdSource as an education policy reporter, where she covers early childhood education and bilingual education. Prior to that, Ashley was the Storytelling Editor at the Desert Sun leading coverage of events like BNP Paribas and Coachella.
Ashley's previous position brought her to academia, as a Journalist in Residence and Visiting Assistant Professor of Journalism at The Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University. While at CCJ, she lead classes in digital storytelling and newswriting. Ashley also worked as a freelance producer for Macon Magazine, Georgia Public Broadcasting and The (Macon) Telegraph.
Ashley earned a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of California at Berkeley, where she was an instructor in the UC Berkeley Film and Media Department and a senior producer and reporter for Richmond Confidential, a hyperlocal news site.
Ashley is passionate about her multicultural heritage and enjoys travel. She is both American and South American and spent many years in Guyana, a small country off the Caribbean coast.
